Amnesty International has expressed concern over what it described as a coordinated attempt to silence an Islamic cleric, Malam Yahaya Masussuka, in Katsina State.
In a statement, the global human rights organisation said recent developments suggest a possible sectarian alliance aimed at undermining the cleric’s freedom to practise and preach his faith. It warned that any move to shut down Masussuka’s religious activities would amount to a violation of his constitutional right to freedom of religion as guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.
Amnesty International noted that Masussuka has consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, and understanding among Muslim faithful.
This development comes on the heels of a recent announcement by the Katsina State Government, expressing concern over persistent complaints lodged against the cleric. The government said it is considering summoning Masussuka before a committee of Ulamas to explain and justify his preaching methods.
The situation has triggered wider discussions on religious freedom, due process, and the scope of state involvement in doctrinal matters within the state.
